The R179 is a planned New York City Subway car.
The R179 contract, which originally consisted of 420 cars, was intended to replace the R44s, but due to structural integrity issues in the the New York City Transit fleet, its retirement was facilitated by the rest of the R160 order. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority later dropped the plan to order cars for Staten Island Railway, instead opting to overhaul the R46s to operate on the SIR in place of the R44s there.
The proposed MTA 2010-2014 Capital Program has pointed toward an order of 60-foot cars.[1] The order is to be broken down into a base order of 290 cars (equal to the number of R32s and R42s on MTA property), which is expected to be awarded in January 2011 and an option of 50 cars which is expected to be exercised in August 2012.
The official RFP was issued on June 3, 2010. Bids were due by the following August 13, but as of May 2011, no contract has been awarded, expected to be no earlier than August 2011. The contract specifies the purchase of 290 cars with 250 arranged as 5 car sets and the remaining 40 arranged in four car sets, with the 50 option 1 cars arranged in 5 car sets. There is also a second option for 80 additional cars pending funding. [2]
